Tukwini Mandela – Snap – Hidden Black Stories

GamePlan was delighted to have client Tukwini Mandela involved on this fantastic ‘Hidden Black Stories’ project. This was launched on the 11th February, the anniversary of when her Tukwini’s grandfather President Mandela was released from prison in 1990.

This is an immersive Augmented Reality (AR) experience unpacking Black stories that are hidden in the public realm, created in partnership with Snap Inc. (with input from several expert U.K. organisations including, Black Cultural Archives, Black History Walks, Mary Seacole Trust, Nubian Jak Trust, Slavery Remembrance, and 100 Great Black Britons.)

This new suite of AR experiences is part of Snap’s ongoing commitment to lend its platform to underrepresented communities and showcase the power of AR as an advocacy tool.

The result is a range of Augmented Reality experiences created so Snapchatters can discover and appreciate Black British and Black stories hidden in plain sight. The ‘Local Lens’ will turn the whole of Trafalgar Square into an immersive history lesson – showcasing the moments, figures, and stories of Black British History that live behind the more famous monuments of the iconic London location. The ‘Landmarker Lens’ pays tribute to Mary Seacole and brings magic to her statue outside St Thomas’ Hospital.

The AR experience will be permanent to encourage ongoing education and attention on Black British History.
